NEW ORLEANS – Three-time national champion KeAndre Bates and two-time national champion Grant Holloway are among the 10 semifinalists for The Bowerman, track and field's version of the Heisman Trophy, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday (June 15).
Three finalists for The Bowerman, track and field's highest individual honor, will be announced June 21.
Bates, a junior, became the seventh man in Division I history to sweep the long jump and triple jump titles at NCAA Outdoor Championships. It was the 11th horizontal jumps sweep in Division I history. The El Paso, Texas native joined 2015 The Bowerman winner Marquis Dendy (2014, 2015) as the only other Gator to accomplish the feat.
Bates also won the long jump title and took second in the triple jump at NCAA Indoor Championships, earning USTFCCCA National Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors.
Holloway, just a freshman, became the first man in Division I history to log top-2 finishes in both the 110 hurdles and long jump at NCAA Outdoors. The Chesapeake, Va. native also became the first freshman in history to win both the indoor 60 hurdles and outdoor 110 hurdles national titles.
Additionally, Holloway joined two-time Olympic decathlon gold medalist Ashton Eaton and 2016 Olympic decathlon bronze medalist Damian Warner as the only other man in the world since 1999 to wind-legally break 13.50 seconds in the 110 hurdles and long jump over 8.00 meters in an outdoor season.
Holloway and UTEP's Emmanuel Korir are the only two freshmen The Bowerman semifinalists this year. They are the seventh and eighth freshmen semifinalists in history.
Bates and Holloway also became the second pair of teammates in Division I history to post a 1-2 finish in the long jump at NCAA Outdoors.
