Dr. Jeff Guin joins the Gators as Senior Associate Athletics Director – Hawkins Center later this summer after serving a similar role at Texas A&M. Guin, who started at UF as a basketball manager in 1993, earned three of his four degrees at the University of Florida.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Dr. Jeff Guin (GEW-in) returns to his alma mater to lead the University of Florida's Otis P. Hawkins Center for Academic and Personal Excellence at Farrior Hall, Gator Athletics Director Scott Stricklin announced Monday. The Hawkins Center is the site where the 480 Gator student-athletes receive academic support, and gain personal and leadership development as they prepare for their careers.
"Jeff brings a unique blend of talent and experience back to Gainesville, which will benefit our student-athletes and staff," Stricklin said. "We are excited to have Jeff in this key leadership position over the Hawkins Center at Farrior Hall."
Guin will join the University Athletics Association in mid-July after serving as the Associate Athletics Director for Academics at Texas A&M since August of 2015. In his time at TAMU, Dr. Guin worked with athletics and university staff to enhance the first-year academic and development experience for Aggie student-athletes. TAMU athletics joined campus organizations for celebrations such as Black and Women's History Months. The first Aggie student-athlete career fair sponsored by the student-athlete academic center was held in 2016, serving as an opportunity for student-athletes to connect with potential employers. In the last two seasons, Aggie student-athletes have posted record high numbers for Athletics Director's Honor Roll, Dean's Honor Roll and Distinguished Student honors.
"My family and I are excited about coming to the University of Florida and joining Gator Nation," Guin said. "Thank you to Scott Stricklin and the search committee for this opportunity to join the Hawkins Center team and continue to build upon the tremendous success our student-athletes experience in their education, athletics, personal and career development."
Guin replaces Dr. Keith Carodine, Senior Associate Athletics Director – Hawkins Center. He announced in January that he will retire from the University Athletic Association at the end of July and Carodine plans to jump right into other opportunities. He oversaw the UAA student-athlete academic and development department for 25 years.
Collegiate Athletics Career Path:
His collegiate athletics career path started as a Florida undergraduate. While serving as a student-manager with the men's basketball team under Lon Kruger (1993-96) and then Billy Donovan (1996-97), Guin earned three degrees - a bachelor's degree in education in 1995, a master's in education in 1996, and a master's degree in sports management in 1997. He was a manager for the first Gator basketball team to reach the NCAA Final Four (1994) and also reached the 1995 NCAA Tournament.
Upon graduation, Guin served in an administrative role with the University of Illinois men's basketball program from 1997 until 2003. He helped Illinois to five NCAA Tournament appearances under coaches Lon Kruger and Bill Self, and helped the Illini earn three Big 10 titles and a Big 10 Tournament title in 2003.
Guin held two assistant men's basketball coaching positions (Western Illinois 2003-06; Florida Atlantic 2006-08) before moving into academic advisement.
He returned to Illinois to begin his academic advisement career path. He was an Illini academic advisor from 2008-13 while also beginning work toward his Doctor of Education in Education and Organizational Leadership. He worked with a variety of sports, including football for his final two years. The Illini football team achieved its highest grade point average in 10 years and improved each term.
He then joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2013 as an Associate Athletics Director for Student Support Services, a position he held for two years. At UAB, it was a goal to grow and build student-athlete Life Skills and Career Development programming. These efforts were successful, with Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) participation growing nearly fourfold. A goal of 1,000 service hours were set (and met) for his first year and Blazer student-athletes more than doubled their service hours in the second year. Blazer student-athlete academic support areas were improved with renovations and new equipment.
Academic Honors & Family:
Before enrolling at Florida, Guin was an Academic All-America NJCAA Region 8 honoree in 1992 and 1993 playing for Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla.
A native of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Guin is married to Betsy and the couple has three children—twins Ellee and Troy, and Luke.
