Florida rides another outstanding start, this one by Brady Singer, to stay unbeaten at the College World Series.
COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
FLORIDA 5, LOUISVILLE 1
WHAT HAPPENED: Sophomore right-hander Brady Singer, making the biggest start of his UF career, quieted Louisville's talented lineup over seven innings and relievers Nick Horvath and Tyler Dyson finished off the Cardinals in Florida's 5-1 win at TD Ameritrade Park. Singer held Louisville scoreless through the first six innings, retiring 11 consecutive hitters until Jake Snider's one-out single in the sixth. Singer held the Cardinals to six hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out nine in Florida's second consecutive dominant start in Omaha. Alex Faedo tossed seven shutout innings and struck out 11 on Sunday in UF's 3-0 win over Texas Christian. More importantly, the Gators stayed in the winners bracket, marking only the third time in 11 trips to the CWS that Florida has won its first two games in Omaha (2005, 2011).
PLAY OF THE GAME: The Gators led 1-0 in the fourth thanks to Austin Langworthy's opposite-field home run in the third. With two outs and nobody on, Louisville starter Kade McClure walked Nelson Maldonado and then gave up a single to Jonathan India to put runners at first and third. Up stepped Gators second baseman Deacon Liput, who fell behind in the count. However, on McClure's 1-2 fastball down in the zone, Liput hammered it over the right field wall for a three-run homer and 4-0 lead for the Gators.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Louisville first baseman Brendan McKay, the Dick Howser Trophy winner as the national player of the year, doubled twice and scored the Cardinals' only run. However, a 2-for-4 night and no RBIs from McKay is not a bad night for opposing teams. The fourth overall selection in the MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, all four of McKay's trips to the plate came with nobody on base.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: Florida's pitching has been spectacular since Game 3 of the super regional against Wake Forest and that storyline held firm on Tuesday. Singer ran the Gators' scoreless streak to 24 2/3 innings until Colin Lyman's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Singer, Dyson and Faedo combined for a shutout against Wake Forest to clinch Florida's sixth trip to Omaha in eight seasons, and then in Florida's win against TCU on Sunday, Faedo and closer Michael Byrne combined for a five-hit shutout.
UP NEXT: The Gators stay in the winners bracket and now have the next two days off before facing the winner of the TCU-Louisville elimination game on Friday night. TCU, which stayed alive on Tuesday by eliminating Texas A&M, and Louisville face each other on Thursday night.
