UNITED KINGDOM -- Junior Alejandro Tosti has spent the past three days competing in the 2017 British Amateur at Royal St. Georges in Sandwich, England.
After defeating four players including the No. 1 and No. 8 ranked players in the tournament, Tosti's run for the title ended in the semifinal round to Australia's Dylan Perry Friday.
The 2017 SEC Individual Champion was seeded as the No. 32 seed in the match play tournament which granted him a bye from the first round of competition on Wednesday. In the second round, Tosti would draw England's Gian-Marco Petrozzi defeating the No. 49 seed 3&1 to move to the second day of competition.
The 2017 PING and Golfweek All-American faced the tournament's top seed in Ireland's Caolan Rafferty in the third round. After 18 holes, the two golfers were tied on their scorecards and headed to sudden death. Tosti and Rafferty were still square after six extra holes of golf but, on the 25th hole of play Tosti defeated the No. 1 seed to move onto the fourth round.
In the fourth round, the Florida junior jumped out to a 1UP lead after a birdie putt on the 3rd. Tosti extended his lead to 3UP after five holes of play against England's Charlie Strickland. He would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way winning 4&3 after just 15 holes.
Once again, in the quarterfinals a birdie on the third hole would get Tosti off and running against the No. 8 seeded Stefano Mazzoli of Italy. Four holes later on the 7th, Tosti carded and eagle to give him a 2UP lead. He advanced to the semifinals after Mazzoli was unable to make par on the par three 16th as Tosti won 3&2.
The semifinal pitted Tosti against No. 20 Perry who had won his previous three matches in sudden death. The two were even through the first five holes but, Tosti's bogie at the 6th gave Perry a 1UP edge. Perry would then take the 8th and 9th hole giving him a 3UP advantage at the turn. Tosti would take the 11th hole to gain a stroke back but, was unable to come all the way back losing 3&2 to the Australian.
