SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Half of the six Gators advanced to semifinals on the opening evening of the United States Track and Field Outdoor Championships, which saw temperatures eclipse 105 degrees Thursday (June 22).
Jeff Demps, a 2012 Olympian and four-time individual NCAA champion for the Gators from 2009-12, advanced to the 100 meters semifinals. Demps clocked a season-best time of 10.03 seconds, finishing second in his heat and nabbing an auto berth.
Fellow Olympians Tony McQuay (2010-12) and Calvin Smith (2007-10) advanced to the 400 meters semifinals.
McQuay, a two-time Olympic medalist on Team USA's 4x400 relay, nabbed an auto berth with a time of 45.30 seconds. Smith, a Team USA relay pool member for the 2008 Olympics, secured one of the six at-large spots with a time of 45.52 seconds.
The majority of the Gators at USATF Outdoors open Friday (June 23) afternoon and evening, including headliners Will Claye (triple jump), Kerron Clement (400 hurdles), Eric Futch (400 hurdles), and Christian Taylor (triple jump).
Top-three finishers at the USATF Outdoor Championships clinch spots on Team USA, so long as they hold the IAAF World Championships qualifying standard.
At the Puma Jamaican Senior Championships, freshman Clayton Brown took third in the triple jump, though he does not hold the world standard.
