COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
FLORIDA 3, TCU 0
WHAT HAPPENED: Alex Faedo, that's what happened. Florida's junior right-hander delivered his second consecutive dominant performance against TCU in the CWS. Faedo pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings, limiting the Horned Frogs to three hits while walking four and striking out 11. In two starts in Omaha, Faedo tossed 14 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed just five hits. He struck out 22 and walked six in stamping his place in University of Florida baseball lore. Closer Michael Byrne replaced Faedo with one out in the eighth inning and got the final five outs for his 18th save.
PLAY OF THE GAME: The Gators led 2-0 in the seventh inning as tension built around TD Ameritrade Park to see whether the slumping UF offense could add insurance runs or TCU's bats would wake up. Horned Frogs starter Jared Janczak (7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO) also pitched well and appeared ready to get out of the seventh when Deacon Liput bounced a ball toward first base and teammate Christian Hicks on third. Instead of a ground out to first to end the inning, the ball hit the bag and darted toward the infield, where TCU second baseman Cam Warner fielded it. Liput beat the throw, which allowed Hicks to score and give the Gators a three-run lead and some extra breathing room.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Gators shortstop Dalton Guthrie suffered a lower-body injury early in the game and was forced to leave after he struck out to end the third inning. His status for the championship series remains uncertain. Guthrie's nine career CWS hits are tied with Preston Tucker, Mike Zunino and Mike Rivera for most in school history.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: Florida's starting pitchers have struck out 42 hitters in 26 innings during the CWS. In addition, The Gators won their 50th game of the season Saturday, marking the first time in program history that UF has won 50 games for three consecutive seasons.
UP NEXT: The Gators face Southeastern Conference rival LSU on Monday night in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series. The Gators won two of three against the Tigers during the regular season March 24-26 at McKethan Stadium. The Gators won the SEC East title, and LSU won the SEC West.
