Gator Redshirt Junior Kicker Named to National Awards List
2017 Lou Groza Award Watch List
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Redshirt junior kicker Eddy Pineiro was selected to the 2017 Lou Groza Award Watch List, as the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced on Wednesday.
Pineiro, a criminology major, earned a spot on the watch list after garnering Second Team All-SEC honors by Pro Football Focus and Athlon Sports. He finished his sophomore season with an 84.0 field goals made percentage by hitting 21 of his 25 attempts. He made 11 field goals of 40-plus yards, including two in the Outback Bowl.
The Miami, Fla. native booted two 54-yard field goals last season, tying for sixth-longest in the history of UF Football. He tied for third in the nation, making 1.85 field goals per game and finished first on the Gators in points scored with 95.
The award is named in honor of one of the all-time great kickers in football history, Lou Groza. After serving in World War II, Groza signed with the Cleveland Browns in 1046. A six-time all-pro tackle, Groza really earned his fame, and his famous nickname, "The Toe," as a kicker. In 1950 Groza won the NFL Championship game for the Browns by kicking a field goal with 28 seconds left. That was just the first of what would turn out to be four championships that Groza and the Cleveland Browns shared.
Lou left a legacy that is still unmatched in NFL history. The name, Lou Groza is etched into football immortality. The Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is a tribute to his life, his accomplishments and the challenge he left to aspiring kickers today.
The announcement of the winner is made during The Home Depot College Football Awards.
