Senior Defensive Back Named to National Awards Watch List
2017 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Watch List
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Senior defensive back Duke Dawson earned a spot on his third preseason watch list, this time being named to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Watch List.
Dawson, a second-team Pro Football Focus All-SEC as a junior, played in 12 games last season played and started seven at nickel corner. The Cross City, Fla. native recorded one interception (returned for a touchdown) in 2016 and a team-high seven pass breakups. Overall, Dawson totaled 24 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss and one forced fumble last fall.
The African American studies major enters his senior campaign with 48 tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles and two interceptions, which were both returned for touchdowns.
The rising senior was also one of three members of the Gators chosen to represent Florida at SEC Media Days this week.
The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame gives the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award annually to the top defensive back in college football. The award, which was universally accepted as one of the nation's top collegiate sports honors, is bestowed based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character.
All three finalists are invited and required to attend the ESPN's College Football Awards Show broadcast live from Atlanta on Dec. 7, 2017 where the winner is announced along with a number of other award winners. The official presentation of the award is Feb. 6, 2018 at a formal banquet in Oklahoma City.
