
World Champion: Dressel Wins First Individual Gold in 100m Free

Five Gators race overall; Dressel takes home first individual gold along with another American record
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Caeleb Dressel led the Gators on FINA Day 5, picking up a gold medal in the men's 100m free. In all, five Gators swam on Thursday, with both Dressel and Liliana Szilagyi competing in a final.
Dressel won his first individual gold medal on Thursday, posting an American record of 47.17 in the men's 100m free final. The rising senior got out to the early lead in the first 50 and did not give an inch in the final stretch, beating the field by .6 seconds. This swim was the third American record Dressel has set this week.
This was also Dressel's third gold medal this week, with the other two coming from the men's 4x100m free relay and mixed 4x100m medley relay. On Friday's docket, he has the men's 50m free and 100m fly prelims, and he may be an option for the men's 4x200m free relay as well.
Szilagyi (Hungary) finished seventh overall in the women's 200m fly final, her best finish of the FINA Championships thus far. The rising sophomore posted a time of 2:07.58 in the race, her fastest swim in the 200 fly this week.
Corey Main, representing New Zealand, made his second semi-final of the week, earning a spot in the 200m back semi. Main swam a 1:58.34 to finish 16th overall in the preliminary round and swam a 2:01.00 in the semis.
Two other former Gators raced in the 200m back prelims with Omar Pinzon representing Columbia and Carlos Omana representing Venezuela. Pinzon finished 28th in the field with a time of 2:00.68 and Omana posted a time of 2:03.13 to finish 35th overall.
