Fred Ridley to become 7th chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Former Florida men's golfer Fred Ridley has been named the chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters.
Once current chairman, Billy Payne, steps down on October 16th, Ridley will assume his role as the 7th chairman in the clubs history. He had been serving on the as the competition committee chairman for The Masters since 2011.
Ridley, a three-time letterman for the Gators in the early 70s, served as an alternate for the 1973 Florida national championship team.
After earning his bachelor's degree from Florida, continued his golf career. Ridley won the 1975 Amateur Open defeating the likes of Curtis Strange and fellow Gator Andy Bean in match-play.
Ridley competed in five major championships as an amateur which included the 1976, 1977 and 1978 Masters. He also played on the 1977 US Walker Cup team while captaining the team in 1987 and 1989.
In 2004, Ridley was elected president of the United States Golf Association, and served as the co-chairman of the International Golf Federation.
