Sani Brown Advances at World Championships
Friday, August 4, 2017 | Track and Field
Hakim Sani Brown, at just 18 years old, could become the youngest man in history to make the World Championships 100 meters final Saturday
Sani Brown, who swept the Japanese 100 and 200 meters national titles in June, overcame a slow start and closed with incredible power to win his heat, which featured Jamaica's Yohan Blake a four-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champion.
The 100 meters semifinal and final are slated for Saturday night. No Japanese man has ever made the World Championships final in the 100. The best finish in the event by a Japanese sprinter came in 2003, when Nobuhara Asahara finished sixth in his semifinal heat.
Where'd @Hakimsanib come from before tonight's impressive #London2017 100m prelim?

In his third World Championships appearance, Marquis Dendy missed the long jump final, finishing 20th overall. Dendy, the 2016 indoor world champion, has yet to make a World Championships final in his career.
Half-miler Andres Arroyo (Puerto Rico) and shot put thrower Stipe Zunic (Croatia)—both 2016 Olympians—join Sani Brown in Saturday competition, though they compete in the morning session, set for 5 a.m. ET.

Additional Quotes
"It's another one that I didn't get the chance to make the finals, but I'm still feeling blessed because last year at the Olympic Trials I tore my achilles, so being here is something that I cherish a lot. I've just got to go back to the drawing board and figure some stuff out, come back next World Championships and take care of business a little better." – Marquis Dendy on missing the long jump final
"It was a little bit chilly, so I was worried. But my body worked really well. I wasn't (nervous) at all. I just tried to focus on myself during the race. I just have to push more to make the final." – Hakim Sani Brown on his 100 meters quarterfinal race
