An abnormality was found during Gators early enrollee Randy Russell’s pre-participation physical, thus cutting short his football career.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Defensive back Randy Russell, one of the state's top recruits, will not play for the Gators.
The school announced Thursday afternoon that its medical staff discovered an abnormality in the freshman's cardiac workup, which prohibits him from participating in athletics. Russell joined the program this month out of Carol City High in Miami.
UAA Statement via Senior Associate Athletics Director Steve McClain:
"During the course of the UAA's incoming pre-participation physical, the Gators' medical staff discovered an abnormality in Randy Russell's cardiac workup. Unfortunately, this condition will prohibit him from participating in athletics."
Head Coach Dan Mullen:
"As tragic as this is for Randy and his family to hear this news, this discovery is life-saving for him. We will be fully supportive in any way we can for Randy and his family. He will continue to be a part of the Gator football family and we will assist him in his academic pursuits at the University of Florida."
Meanwhile, Russell addressed the situation via Twitter on Thursday afternoon:
