Long Jump Sweep, DMR Highlight Gators’ Night at Arkansas
Friday, January 26, 2018 | Track and Field
Grant Holloway and KeAndre Bates now rank second and third nationally in the long jump
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Florida swept the men's long jump with the second- and third-best marks in the nation, while its men's distance medley relay team ran the country's second-fastest time and cracked the program's All-Time Top 10 Friday night at the Razorback Invitational.
Sophomore Grant Holloway and senior KeAndre Bates, the reigning indoor national champion, were the Gators' 1-2 punch in the long jump. Holloway took the win with a top mark of 7.97 meters (26 feet, 1.75 inches) and passed his final two attempts. Bates placed second at 7.88 meters (25 feet, 10.25 inches)—which came on his sixth and final jump of the evening.
The DMR squad shaved 13 seconds off its time from two weeks ago to tie the No. 9-ranked time on the Gators' All-Time Top 10 list (9:40.05), with freshman quarter-miler Benjamin Lobo Vedel being the quartet's only new addition. Junior Sam Ahrenholz led off and handed to Lobo Vedel, who split 45.52 seconds. Sophomore Justin Pacifico ran the 800 meters leg in 1:50.92, and redshirt sophomore Jack Guyton anchored with a 4:04.53 mile.
Other notable results for the men included junior Kunle Fasasi's season-best time in the 200 meters, as well as Jhonny Victor tying his indoor personal record in the high jump.
On the women's side, senior Darrielle McQueen took fourth in a competitive long jump field, finishing just two centimeters shy of her season best. Junior Yanis David finished sixth and was 11 centimeters off her season best.
SEC Network will provide television coverage at 2 p.m. ET Saturday. Coverage will also stream live online via Watch ESPN.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on the Gators' notable performances Friday evening…
"(The long jump) guys did what they do. Not very impressed with Grant's series as a whole, but he got the win; we've got to get better, more consistent. KeAndre was great coming through on his last jump to get a big mark. The big thing is we're trying to qualify for nationals, and both those marks will get in. Thought the women's long jumpers continued to get better as well. Kunle ran very well in the 200 (meters) tonight. Very pleased with Ryan Clark; he's been fighting some injuries but he is getting better and better. Jhonny did a good job tonight; he's working hard, and we're looking for bigger things out of him. Also was proud of Clayton Brown, who has been a little sick but fought through that.
"And I thought the DMR did a good job. Benjamin with a big split, I was really proud of Sam with his leadoff leg, running under three minutes for the 1,200 (meters). That's a relay we just have to make a decision on, as a staff, if we really want to chase that to (try) and qualify for the national meet. They took a step towards convincing me we better try that later on in the year.
"We're where we need to be."
