BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Wednesday the Southeastern Conference announced that University of Florida men's tennis student-athlete Andy Andrade was named the SEC Freshman of Week.
The former IMG Academy standout earned his first career SEC honor after two strong performances in the team's first true road contests of the year against No. 13 Michigan and No. 2 Ohio State.
Against the Buckeyes Andrade earned his first win against an opponent ranked in the ITA singles rankings, defeating Kyle Seelig who is ranked 30th. The two competed at the No. 5 singles position with Andrade taking the match by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 victory. Andrade won the third set tiebreak by a score of 10-8.
Two nights before Andrade was tested against Michigan's Carter Lin, dropping the first set 6-0. The freshman was unfazed by the quick set loss and settled down to take the second set 7-6(5). In the third set, Andrade held a 2-1 lead before the Gators clinched the match on court one.
