Gators Win Two Titles, Post Two Collegiate All-Time Top 10 Performances
Sunday, February 25, 2018 | Track and Field
Grant Holloway repeated as the 60 hurdles champion, while Clayton Brown surprised with the triple jump title
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Florida captured a pair of individual titles and posted two times and marks that rank on the collegiate all-time top 10, as it closed the SEC Indoor Championships third in the men's standings and sixth on the women's side.
The first of two titles came from sophomore Grant Holloway, who repeated as the 60-meter hurdles champion. Holloway joined Alabama's Ron Bramlett (2001-02) and Gator Great Eddie Lovett (2011-14) as the only other men in history to win consecutive SEC 60 hurdles crowns. The Chesapeake, Va., native's time of 7.53 seconds broke Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium's facility record as well.
Sophomore Clayton Brown collected the SEC triple jump title with what can only be described as an insanely-clutch final attempt. Brown entered the day outside the national top 16 and in need of mark over 16 meters to avoid an early end to his indoor season. The St. Andrew, Jamaica native hopped, skipped and jumped 16.08 meters (52 feet, 9.25 inches) for the win.
Gators have won seven of the last 10 SEC indoor men's triple jump titles, including KeAndre Bates' victory last season. Bates took bronze Sunday, marking the seventh time in his career he finished third or higher in an SEC Championships competition.
Although junior Yanis David took runner-up honors in the triple jump, she popped off one of the best marks in collegiate history. David seized the lead on her sixth and final jump with a mark of 14.11 meters (46 feet, 3.5 inches), breaking the school record by 10 centimeters and becoming the No. 7-ranked jumper on the collegiate All-Time Top 10. David's personal best entering the day was 13.93 meters (45 feet, 8.5 inches), set in February 2017. American and collegiate record holder Keturah Orji snagged the title back with a final jump of 14.18 meters (46 feet, 6.25 inches).
The same was true of the men's 4x400 relay, which took runner-up honors but recorded the fifth-fastest time in collegiate history and eighth-fastest time ever recorded indoors (3:02.65). The Gators' relay team was comprised of freshman Benjamin Lobo Vedel, junior Kunle Fasasi, freshman Chantz Sawyers, and Holloway.
The Gators return to College Station in two weeks for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Qualifiers and entrants for the national meet will be announced via the NCAA's website Tuesday by 10 p.m. ET.
QUOTES FROM THE CHAMPIONS
Clayton Brown on winning the SEC triple jump title…
"The feeling to win is very special, because I didn't come in expecting to win. All I came in to do was qualify for nationals, and I got the win and qualified for nationals. I'm very happy. That last jump, I was thinking I couldn't let Alabama beat me and that my team is going to need me at nationals. That was running through my head. I thought that would help me get the last push.
"I knew it was my farthest jump for the day, but I didn't know how far it was. I was waiting anxiously, and I could see [Assistant] Coach [Nic] Petersen waiting over there, anxiously. To see the mark, I got really happy and it felt great. I need to improve on my second phase and my approach. I've been struggling with my approach all year. To get it down on the last one was very special for me."
Lloydricia Cameron on her SEC shot put title Saturday night…
"This was way better than the outdoor one. I started No. 2 coming in, but through the whole competition I struggled a lot. I was praying to God, asking him to guide me through everything. On my last throw I just prayed and asked him to give me what I deserved. I've been telling everyone I do not remember my last throw. The shot was on my neck, and from there I didn't even feel like I was in my body. I honestly feel like it was God sending his angel down, guiding me through this whole struggle, and I think him for it all. I have a lot of preparation to do (ahead of NCAAs), but I'm ready."
Grant Holloway on repeating as the SEC 60 hurdles champion…
"It feels good. This year was definitely a better showing than last year. Kind of shut it down within four hurdles, so I know I've got a lot of potential going into NCAAs in two weeks. Just have to keep training. Coach Holloway definitely saw something I need to work on. Going to get back to Gainesville and just start training again."
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on Grant Holloway repeating as SEC 60 hurdles champion Sunday…
"That was a clean run. He just needed to be the SEC champion. We're not coming in here and trying to break the collegiate record or anything like that; we've done that. From this point on, it's just about winning the race and putting up those 10 points for the Gators.
Coach Holloway on Clayton Brown's SEC triple jump title…
"Wow. On the runway, it's your last jump, you're not in the NCAA meet, and not only does he win the meet but he jumps far enough to get to the NCAA meet. We're excited about that as well. Very proud of Clayton."
Coach Holloway on Yanis David becoming the No. 7 performer on the women's triple jump collegiate all-time top 10…
"When you put a scare into the American record holder, it's always a good thing. For her to come down and execute like that just shows the talent she is. I've been teasing her because a lot of her big marks have been coming in the summertime, and I was like, 'Could we see the summer Yanis, please?' Summer Yanis showed up, so we're pretty pleased about that as well."
Coach Holloway on the women's team as a whole entering the NCAA Indoor Championships…
"We've got to get mentally and physically tougher. We tend to back off when things hurt a little bit. We tend to back off if we think things are going to hurt. If we're going to continue to get better on the women's side, we have to find what young ladies are not afraid to engage in the party and fight. That was my talk to them after the meet. And we have to get better. We just do."
Coach Holloway on the men's team this weekend and heading into NCAA Indoor Championships…
"I'll be honest, I'm disappointed. We lost the meet by six-and-a-half or seven points, and we left a lot of points out there. I'm not going to go through and embarrass anybody but, as a whole, this group has to know we were potentially the best team here. And I told them this morning the team that believed the most, the team that fought the hardest would win. Kudos to Dan Waters and Alabama, because they were the team that wanted it most and fought hardest. We've got to understand that people want to beat us because we're Florida, and no one is going to lie down for us.
"When we get back here in two weeks, if we want any chance of getting the (championship) trophy, we better wake up, dot our Is and cross our Ts."
