KeAndre Bates and Grant Holloway both lead the nation in at least one event
NEW ORLEANS – Senior horizontal jumper KeAndre Bates and sophomore hurdler, jumper and sprinter Grant Holloway remained on the latest edition of The Bowerman Men's Watch List, as announced Thursday afternoon by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Bates, a 2017 semifinalist for The Bowerman and the 2017 USTFCCCA National Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, is the only Division I man ranked in the top five nationally in both the long jump and triple jump this season.
The three-time national champion's season-best triple jump mark (16.48 meters / 54 feet, 1 inch) leads all of Division I by 15 centimeters. The El Paso, Texas native also ranks third nationally in the long jump at 7.88 meters (25 feet, 10.25 inches). Both those marks were set two weeks ago at the Razorback Invitational.
Bates entered the 2018 season coming off of the following highlights:
Holloway, also a 2017 semifinalist for The Bowerman, picked up right where he left off following his stellar freshman campaign. The two-time national champion leads the nation with the third-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in collegiate history (7.49 seconds), ranks second nationally in the long jump (7.97 meters / 26 feet, 1.75 inches), and ran second for the Gators' nation-leading 4x400 relay team—which ran the eighth-fastest time in collegiate history (3:03.49).
The Chesapeake, Va., native is the only man in collegiate history to crack the collegiate all-time top 10 in the 60 hurdles and with a 4x400 relay team. Holloway is also the only collegian in history to run 7.53 seconds or faster in the 60 hurdles and long jump at least 7.90 meters indoors. Wisconsin's Reggie Torian (1994-97) was the closest, touting collegiate PRs of 7.47 seconds and 7.89 meters.
Entering the season, Holloway and two-time Olympic decathlon gold medalist Ashton Eaton were the only men in the world since 1999 with indoor personal records below 7.75 seconds (60 hurdles) and of at least 8.05 meters (long jump). With his near-historic 60 hurdles run this year, Holloway is now the only man in the world since 1999 to break 7.50 seconds and long jump at least 8.05 meters indoors, the latter of which he did last season.
Here's a closer look at some of Holloway's other achievements from a year ago:
The Gators continue their 2018 season Friday and Saturday at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational and the Iowa State Classic.
