Holloway Breaks Collegiate Record as Gators Climb National Rankings
Friday, February 9, 2018 | Track and Field
Grant Holloway is the second man in history to break 7.43 seconds before turning 21 years old
CLEMSON, S.C. – Sophomore hurdler Grant Holloway broke the collegiate record in the 60-meter hurdles, while another trio of Gators posted times and marks that rank in the top 10 nationally Friday night at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational.
Holloway won the 60 hurdles in 7.42 seconds, breaking the collegiate record of 7.45 seconds held by Omar McLeod—who took second to Holloway in Friday night's record-breaking race. McLeod last set the record at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships. The Chesapeake, Va., native's time also makes him the No. 11-ranked American in 60 hurdles history, and ties him for 20th on the all-time world indoor 60 hurdles list.
Holloway, who turned 20 in November, joins Cuba's Dayron Robles as the only other man in history to run 7.42 seconds or faster prior to turning 21 years old (per records kept by alltime-athletics). Robles, who was also born in November, ran 7.39 seconds in February 2007, when he was 20 years old.
The trio of Gators who rose nationally consisted of Lloydricia Cameron, Darrielle McQueen, and Michael Timpson Jr.
Cameron climbed to fourth on the indoor descending order list in the shot put with a winning throw of 17.46 meters (57 feet, 3.5 inches), just one centimeter off her personal record—which is the No. 5-ranked mark on the program's All-Time Indoor Top 10.
McQueen jumped (literally) to sixth nationally in the long jump, posting a top mark of 6.39 meters (20 feet, 11.75 inches). The Tallahassee, Fla., product topped her season best by three centimeters.
Timpson Jr. topped his 60 meters personal record in all three of his races Friday night, running matching 6.64s in the quarterfinals and semifinals before clocking 6.63 in the final. The third time of the evening tied him for 10th nationally this season, and for No. 8 on the program's All-Time Indoor Top 10.
Florida concludes its trips to the Tiger Paw Invitational and Iowa State Classic Saturday afternoon.
WORDS FROM THE RECORD BREAKER
Grant Holloway on breaking the collegiate record…
"I couldn't have done it without the whole University of Florida coaching staff. Big shout-out to (Head) Coach (Mike) Holloway, (assistant) Coach (Mellanee) Welty for sticking with me after I had surgery this summer. Big shot-out to my physical therapist Ms. Susan … (assistant) Coach (Adrain) Mann, (assistant) Coach (Nic) Petersen, the staff as a whole, I couldn't have done it without them. After surgery, I was a little hard on myself with everything I had to do."
Holloway his emotions after the race…
"It was just everything piled into one. I had the Olympic champion (Omar McLeod) in my heat, and I was right next to Aleec Harris, a USA champion. Just coming out and winning against a great field … it was great. I didn't expect (the collegiate record) this fast, but I'm glad it happened. That's just another ticket I needed to punch. Monday, we're back to normal. Just have to keep training to get better, because someone is out there training as hard as I am."
Holloway on breaking the record in front of his mother and father…
"That felt good. My mom was kind of upset when I was here (three) weeks ago, when I ran against Jarret Eaton and ran 7.49; she was upset saying, 'Oh, I didn't get to see you run it,' thinking I wasn't going to run it again. But I told my mom I got her. I'm glad I did it while she was here. My grandad was here as well. Just to have all my family here for this occasion, it was something special."
Holloway on his recollection of the race…
"I didn't like my start, but it was enough to do what I had to do. By hurdle five I didn't feel nothing on me. I ran through the line, hit the cushion ... all I heard was collegiate record. All the emotion came on. That 15 seconds is something I'll remember for the rest of my life."
Holloway on what's left for him indoors…
"Of course we need an SEC and national title indoors, but everything I'm doing now is gearing me up for outdoors, because outdoors is the bread and butter of University of Florida track and field. SECs is in two weeks, so I'm going to get back to Gainesville Monday and start putting in work."
