Former Gators to Play in U.S. Open Flag Football Tournament this Spring

Danny Wuerffel will captain a team of former Gator players that has entered the American Flag Football League’s U.S. Open of Flag Football tournament this spring.
Former Florida quarterback and 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel will captain a team of former Gator players that has entered the American Flag Football League's U.S. Open of Flag Football tournament this spring. This is a new league partnering with the NFL Network.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to compete for the AFFL U.S. Open Championship," the 43-year old former quarterback said. "I believe the rules of the league favor smart, accurate QBs and receivers with great speed, thus the desire to form a team was born."
To date, Wuerffel has commitments from former Gator Greats Brandon James, Frankie Hammond (pictured below), Major Wright, Chris Doering, Travis McGriff, Moses Jenkins and Taylor Jacobs will be an alternate. Many others have expressed interest to Wuerffel.
The Gators currently on the roster have 16 Southeastern Conference Championship and seven National Championship rings.
"I expect the tournament to be extremely competitive, so I have been working on building a championship roster. As the word spread, I have had a tremendous amount of interest," Wuerffel said.
Other notable names competing in this tournament include Michael Vick, Chad Ochocinco, Justin Forsett, Nate Robinson and Carlos Boozer.
While Wuerffel plans to build a 12-man roster with primarily former UF football players, he also is expecting to select anywhere between 3-to-5 Gainesville area seasoned flag football players to fill the squad.
If you think you have what it takes, join Danny Wuerffel this Friday night (March 23) from 7 – 9 p.m. at Florida's Indoor Practice Facility for an official tryout featuring a chance to play on the Florida Gator alumni team in the $1,000,000 "U.S. Open of Flag Football" hosted by the AFFL and broadcast on the NFL Network.
First and second round games of the tournament will be played on Sunday, April 15th in Bradenton, Fla.
If you wish to tryout, please register here, no later than Friday, March 23rd at noon. Participants will need to complete a liability waiver form as part of the registration process. Collegiate athletes with NCAA eligibility remaining are prohibited from the tryout. The tryout is for pre-registered participants only and not open to the public or participant guests.
