ST. LOUIS, Mo. – University of Florida senior Alex McMurtry repeats as the Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The league office announced the honor Saturday afternoon before the No. 5 Florida gymnastics team takes to the competition floor for the SEC Championships in the Chaifetz Arena.
A vote of the league coaches determines the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
This is Florida's third SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the 15-year history of the award. McMurtry is the first to claim the honor in consecutive seasons. Rebekah Zaiser (who is now Dr. Blickendorf after graduating from medical school) was Florida's first to claim the honor in 2008.

McMurtry is the defending NCAA and SEC all-around champion. Last year, she became the fifth Gator to claim both SEC Athlete and Scholar-Athlete awards for a sport in Florida Athletics history. She claimed the 2017 Honda Award as collegiate gymnastics top athlete.
Earlier this season, McMurtry completed her 'Gym Slam' with her 10.0 on balance beam versus Oklahoma. She is the second Gator and the 10th in NCAA history to earn a 10.0 for each of the four events. In her last performance on March 9, she equaled Florida's all-around best of 39.825 to give her a share of every Gator scoring record. McMurtry's 21 event titles leads the Gators in 2018.
