Florida Shuts Out Florida State

WHAT HAPPENED: It was a classic pitchers' duel on Tuesday night in Jacksonville and the Gators edged No. 5 Florida State 1-0 in the Fresh from Florida Sunshine Showdown.
Austin Langworthy's RBI single in the fourth inning brought home Wil Dalton for the game's only run.
Florida freshman Jack Leftwich shined in just his third career start and picked up the win. He did not allow a hit through the first five innings and struck out five.
Freshman Jordan Butler bridged the gap with two scoreless innings before handing the ball to junior closer Michael Byrne.
Byrne tied the UF career record by picking up his 25th career save, pitching two scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
On the other side, FSU starter Andrew Karp pitched eight innings with one run allowed.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Michael Byrne – Florida's junior closer pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his sixth save of the season. With the save, he tied John Pricher (1988-92) for the most career saves in Florida history at 25.
FROM THE COACH: Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on Michael Byrne: "He's special. I keep saying the same thing over and over, he's got the right temperament. He keeps everything under control. Credit Florida State today, they made him pay for a couple mistakes up in the zone."
On the two freshmen pitchers: "We needed to be really good on the mound tonight, because Karp was equally as good as Jack and Jordan. I can't say enough about the effort of those two freshmen in front of almost 10,000 people. To give up one hit [combined] against a top 5 team like that is just a great performance, and it needed to be that way because Andrew Karp was just as good."
On Jack Leftwich's start: "He was changing speeds and he kept the ball down. I've seen it over and over in practice so I'm not surprised. I'm happy for him. I've seen him go out in intersquad games and have some really good moments. The biggest thing for these freshmen, obviously they're all very talented, is finding that fine line and consistency of knowing what you're going to get every time out."
STANDOUT STAT: 13 – Starter Jack Leftwich retired 13 batters in a row at one point, retiring the side in order in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
UP NEXT: Florida will host No. 7 Vanderbilt for a three-game series beginning Friday night at McKethan Stadium. Friday's game is at 6:30 p.m. and will stream live on SEC Network+.
Saturday (ESPNU) and Sunday's (SEC Network) games will both start at noon.
