GAINESVILLE, Fla. – She used a pair of scissors to pop the large black balloon floating above her head. Orange and blue confetti drifted through the air. It was then all watching on Facebook Live knew that U.S. National Team member Trinity Thomas' collegiate floor routine would include a Gator chomp.
Thomas, a member of the last two U.S. Senior National Teams, revealed her collegiate choice to the social media world on April 9. The next day following her college choice reveal, Thomas was on a plane to be the U.S. representative in the April 14 Tokyo, Japan, World Cup event. She returned to her home in York, Pa., this week and signed her national letter of intent with Florida.
Thomas was the FIG Individual All-Around World Cup runner-up last weekend in her third international assignment for Team USA. She moved up to the senior division last year, taking fourth in the 2017 U.S. P&G Championships all-around. Thomas also took third in her signature events – balance beam and floor exercise – at the 2017 U.S. Championships
"We are very happy to welcome Trinity and her family to the Gator Nation! It was a longer process than some, but we know that the choice on where to attend college is one the biggest decisions our recruits and their families will ever make," Florida Head Coach Jenny Rowland said. "Trinity brings not only amazing international talent to our team, but her charisma, smile and personality will make an immediate impact on the Gainesville community and UF campus. We expect Trinity to be a major contributor on all four events and in the all-around. Gator and gymnastics fans will certainly enjoy watching Trinity and the rest of our incoming class perform in the collegiate arena."
Thomas started to get a sense of the team experience this winter, joining the West York Area High School diving team. Her only season of high school diving seemed to go well, as she took second in the 1 meter Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc. (PIAA) 2A State Championships. This week, Thomas participated in her first track & field meet, running in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and competing in the pole vault. Two-time U.S. Senior National Team member Trinity Thomas will join the Gators next season.
Next Up for the Gators:
No. 5 Florida returns to St. Louis, Mo., for the 2018 NCAA Championships. The Gators compete in the second semifinal on April 20.
A top three semifinal finish would advance the Gators to the NCAA Super Six team final on April 21.
