NEW YORK – For the second consecutive week, the Gators earned two BIG EAST weekly honors as announced by the league office. Sophomore
Cara Trombetta earned defensive player of the week honors while
Shannon Kavanagh picked up freshman of the week honors.
Trombetta becomes the third consecutive Gator to be named the defensive player of the week by the BIG EAST after anchoring the Florida defense that has allowed a league-low 7.89 goals against this season. Trombetta had a stellar week on the road with five caused turnovers, four against Denver, and four ground balls. Against Cincinnati Trombetta and Florida held the Bearcats to just four goals. The defensive unit for the Gators limited both opponents to just 29-of-38 clear attempts and only allowed a total of 33 shots on goal. This is Trombetta's first career defensive honor and second career BIG EAST honor.
For the second straight week, Kavanagh has been named the freshman of the week by the BIG EAST. Kavanagh continues her impressive freshman campaign for the Gators while getting it done on both sides of the ball. Over the weekend Kavanagh totaled nine points on five goals and four assists with 23 draw controls, six ground balls, and a caused turnover. Against Cincinnati Kavanagh tied her own single-game record of draw controls in a game with 12. On the year she has 73 draw controls which is the third-best freshman total in program history and sixth best overall mark at Florida. This is Kavanagh's third career BIG EAST honor.
Junior
Lindsey Ronbeck earned a spot on the weekly honor roll after scoring nine goals, including five against Denver, and totaling 10-points. Ronbeck also earned the game-winning goal in both games last week.
On the year Florida has earned 10 BIG EAST weekly awards and this marks just the third time all season the undefeated Gators have earned multiple weekly awards in a single week.
On Saturday Florida will honor its six seniors before the game as they close out the 2018 regular season. The Gators will host the Butler Bulldogs at noon with a chance to win the 2018 BIG EAST Regular season championship outright.
