WHAT HAPPENED: Florida powered its way past Georgia to clinch at least a share of the Southeastern Conference title for the second consecutive season.
In the middle innings,
JJ Schwarz,
Nelson Maldonado,
Blake Reese and
Jonathan India all left the yard in the 9-3 victory over the Bulldogs.
After extending his hitting streak to eight games in the second inning, Schwarz put the Gators on the board in the fourth when he drove the first pitch of the at-bat into the left-field bleachers. It was his
12th homer of the year and second of the series.
Maldonado followed with a two-run bomb in the fifth. The ball landed in nearly the same spot as Schwarz's and gave Florida its first lead of the game at 3-1.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth, Reese launched a grand slam over the right-field scoreboard opening the Gator lead up to six runs. It was the first grand slam of his collegiate career and the third grand slam by UF this season.
Florida wasn't done in the sixth. With two outs and a runner on, India curved one around the left field foul pole to make it a 9-1 game. The Gators have now scored 71 runs in the six inning this season, which is 23 more than any other inning.
Fifty-two of Florida's 76 home runs have come at home this season and the 76 homers are the most he Gators have hit in the BBCOR era (since 2011).
It would be more than enough run support for
Jackson Kowar, who surrendered just one unearned run in 7.0 innings of work while striking out nine Georgia batters. The junior right-hander allowed just two hits over his last five innings of work en route to his ninth win of the season.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:Â
Blake Reese – The junior second baseman provided four of the Gators' nine runs with one swing. It was the fourth home run of the season for Reese and the first grand slam of his collegiate career.
FROM THE COACH:Â
Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on clinching a share of the SEC Championship: "I have enjoyed every single day watching these guys compete and how they have gone about it. It has been a professional approach and consistent. Their togetherness and comradery has been really special. It is not easy to have a bull's-eye on your back all year. They have handled it with class and consistency. I'm looking forward to seeing how they will do in postseason. I'm certainly happy for these guys to win a SEC Championship because it is not easy to do. It usually comes down to the last series and last year it came down to the last game. We have been to Omaha six times [since O'Sullivan started in 2008] and won the SEC Championship less than that [five times]. We need a couple things going forward. First staying healthy and next is keeping our edge to make sure we stay focused."
Â
STANDOUT STAT:Â
15 – This is the 15th time in program history the Gators have won the SEC regular-season title and fifth under the direction of Coach O'Sullivan. He is one of four coaches in SEC history to claim five or more league titles joining Tilden Campbell (9 - Alabama - last 1955), Skip Bertman (6 - LSU - last 1997) and Ron Polk (5 - Mississippi State/Georgia - last 2001).
UP NEXT:Â Florida will go for the series sweep in the home regular-season finale tomorrow on Senior Day. It would be the Gators' third SEC series sweep this season. First pitch for the Sunday tilt against Georgia is set for 1 p.m.
