WHAT HAPPENED: Florida overcame an early 3-0 deficit to beat LSU 4-3 on Wednesday night in Hoover, Ala., at the 2018 Southeastern Conference Tournament.
Â
LSU jumped to a 3-0 lead through two and a half innings, but the Gators responded with four unanswered runs to take the lead.
Â
In the bottom of the third,
Deacon Liput's RBI double got UF on the board and
Jonathan India tied the game with a RBI single.
Â
Two innings later,
Austin Langworthy put Florida in front with a RBI single to center that scored India from third.
Â
The one-run lead proved to be enough, as
Tommy Mace and the bullpen quieted the Tigers' bats the rest of the night.
Â
Mace improved to 4-0 on the season with seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run.
Â
Michael Byrne pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his 13th save of the season.
Â
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:Â
Tommy Mace – The freshman put together another strong start, going a career-high seven innings with only three hits allowed. Over the last two weeks, Mace has pitched 13 1/3 innings with six hits allowed and just two earned runs. He's only walked one batter with nine strikeouts.
FROM THE COACH:Â
Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on tonight's game: "Another Florida-LSU game, they're always competitive and seem to be entertaining. It was fun to see two freshmen go out there and throw the ball the way they did. I didn't know quite what to expect on this stage, but I think they both pitched well and I think it was a much-needed win for us. We'd lost four in a row going back to the Sunday against Georgia and I don't think we'd lost four in a row since 2013. It wasn't the cleanest of games, but it was one that we needed. I'm really excited about these guys getting back on the winning track and we'll hand the ball off again tomorrow to another freshman
Jack Leftwich."
Â
STANDOUT STAT:Â
4 – Florida had an uncharacteristic night in the field, committing a season-high four errors. The last time UF had four errors in a game was May 9, 2015, at No. 8 Vanderbilt. Coincidentally, the Gators also won that game, 9-7.
UP NEXT:Â With the win, Florida advances in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of Wednesday night's game between Arkansas and South Carolina. The winner's bracket game will be the nightcap on Thursday in Hoover, scheduled to start 30 minutes after the Auburn-Texas A&M game.
