Gator Gymnasts Win Home Opener With School Record; Guise Sets UF All-Around Mark

The No. 5 University of Florida gymnastics team opened the home campaign with a school-record team score of 194.975. The previous best of 194.85 was set in the 1994 NCAA Championships. The Gators easily won Tuesday's Gatorade Season Opener in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center, as Southeast Missouri State tallied a team score of 188.25. The win ups the Gators' record to 2-0, while SEMSU drops to 4-2.
Junior All-American Kristen Guise of Ft. Lauderdale was equally impressive Tuesday evening, posting a Gator All-Time Best all-around score of 39.50 -- erasing her own school record of 39.475 set in the 1994 NCAA Super Six competition. Guise collected three other event crowns Tuesday -- uneven bars (9.925), balance beam (9.925) and floor exercise (9.90). Vanessa Simmons was the only Otahkian to step to the top of the awards stand, as she shared the vault title with UF's Amy Myerson and Colleen Johnson at 9.775.
Next, the Gators travel to Raleigh, N.C., to meet North Carolina State on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
