NO. 8 FLORIDA SOCCER WINS 7TH SEC MATCH, 8-0 OVER MISSISSIPPI

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 8 University of Florida (14-1, 7-0 SEC) soccer team earned their 11th shutout victory in the final regular home match of the season with a 8-0 win over Mississippi (7-7-1, 1-5 SEC) Sunday at Percy Beard Stadium.  The 11 shutout victories set a Florida record, breaking last year's record of 10 shutout victories.  Florida has shutout six of the seven Southeastern Conference opponents it has played this season.  With just one SEC match remaining against Alabama on Oct. 27, Florida is assured of finishing with the SEC's best 1996 regular season record.

Gator forwards Melissa Pini and Danielle Fotopoulos recorded Florida's first ever hat tricks as each player scored three goals in the match.  It was Pini's first collegiate hat trick.  Her first goal was scored at 17:43 in the first half.  In the second half she recorded back-to-back goals within three minutes.  Sunday's hat trick was the first of the season and the fifth of Fotopoulos' career.  The junior transfer from Southern Methodist scored once in the first and twice in the second half to improve her season total to 17 goals.
 
UF's other goals scored were by Erin Baxter and Katie Tullis.  Baxter netted the first goal of the match at 6:33 on a 12 yard center shot.  She was also credited with two assists in the match.  Tullis scored the Gators' seventh goal at 74:43 on a 25-yarder that was bobbled by Mississippi's goalkeeper April Coss before going in. 
 
Florida returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 23 when the Gators travel to Tallahassee to meet Florida State at 5 p.m.
