Gator Gymnastics Team Wins Artistic Challenge

The No. 4 University of Florida gymnastics team took the Artistic Challenge meet title Sunday, held in front of a Hearnes Coliseum crowd of 1,362. The Gators posted a team score of 195.50 Sunday the fourth best score in UF history to up their season record to 5 2. Minnesota was second with a team score of 192.025, followed by Iowa State (188.625) and Missouri (187.925).
"It was a good meet for us," said UF Head Coach Judi Markell. It's always such a pleasure to compete here. Everything is run well and it allows you to compete at your best."
"It was a really good meet for us we needed some confidence. We have not executed as well as we are able in the last couple of meets. We needed to do well to build some momentum heading into our next couple of road competitions."
The Gators swept the top four positions in the Artistic Challenge all around competition. Senior Kristen Guise claimed her third all around crown of the season with a total of 39.475. Junior Chrissy Vogel, in only her second all around competition since the 1994 NCAA Super Six competition, took second with a collegiate best total of 39.225. Florida senior Amy Myerson took third at 38.925, while sophomore Erika Selga tallied a collegiate best all around score of 38.475 to finish fourth.
Florida gymnasts took top honors in all but one event Sunday. The vault was won by Guise, who matched the Gator All Time Best vault mark of 9.975 for the second consecutive competition. Vogel was runner up in the event, matching her season best vault mark of 9.90.
Florida posted a school record team total of 49.175 on the balance beam the second team event record of the year for UF. In the Gators' last home meet against Louisiana State, Florida posted a school record floor exercise total of 49.375. The Gators were led on the beam by the senior duo of Myerson and Guise, who shared the event title with marks of 9.90.
The day's floor exercise title was shared by Vogel and Guise, who posted marks of 9.825. The only event title not claimed by UF was the uneven bars, which was won by Minnesota's Kristen Vandersall at 9.85. Sophomore All American Sybil Stephenson was bars runner up with a mark of 9.825.
Next up, the Gators travel to Auburn, Ala., to meet the Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 18.
