FLORIDA SOCCER TEAM WINS 6-1 IN SEASON OPENER

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida soccer team got the 1996 season to a good start with a 6-1 victory against Campbell University Saturday in front of a crowd of 2,542 at Percy Beard Stadium. Florida's six goals for Saturday's match is just one short of the team record for most goals in a game.

Last year's national leading scorer, junior All-American
Danielle Fotopoulos, scored the first two Gator goals Saturday. She scored the first goal of the game at 7:39 into the match with a header over the goalkeeper from six yards out. Campbell tied the match nine minutes later when Jenn Stephenson scored from a free kick 20 yards down center. The Campbell free kick was the result of an obstruction call against the Gators. Fotopoulos, playing in her first match for the Gators after transferring from Southern Methodist this summer, scored on a solo breakaway at 22:23 that began just outside the penalty box. The Gator scoring drive continued and less than three minutes later when UF's 1995 leading scorer, sophomore forward
Melissa Pini, kicked in an a free penalty kick. The Gators would score once more before the end of the half when junior
Melanie Freeman scored on a solo breakaway seven yards outside right of the goal box at 34:33.
Twenty five minutes into the second half, Pini scored her second goal of the game unassisted after a solo breakaway from midfield. The final Gator score would come at 77:12 when sophomore
Katie Tullis hit from three yards dead center inside the goal box after she received the assist from freshman
Karah Smith. The Gators finished the match with 23 shots compared to Campbell's eight.
The Gators next match will be against the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday, September 6th at Percy Beard Stadium. The Cavaliers are preseason ranked No. 9 by both
Soccer America and
Soccer News. They are ranked No. 8 by the
USA Today Coach's Poll. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. and admission is free.
