GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 8 University of Florida soccer team (7-1, 4-0 SEC) earned its fourth SEC victory of the season vs. the University of Tennessee (3-6, 2-3 SEC) by the score of 6-2 in front of 1,816 at Percy Beard Stadium. In the match, sophomore midfielder
Lisa Olinyk set a Gator record for assists in a single match and in a half with four assists in the first half.
The Gators scored first at 13:18 when sophomore
Erin Baxter scored her first goal of the season on a straight header from six yards out at the top of the goal box. She was assisted on the play by Olinyk. The Lady Volunteers responded eight minutes later to tie the game when Melissa Covington scored from 10 yards out from the center of the penalty box. The Gators scored their second goal in the first half at 24:45 when freshman
Sarah Yohe scored off a corner kick that was placed in by Olinyk. UF would again score one minute later at 25:41 when freshman midfielder
Alison Benoit drove the ball in and took the shot from 12 yards out from center of the penalty box. The goal was Benoit's first as a Gator. Olinyk had her third assist of the match when she crossed the ball from the left side of the penalty box to an open
Danielle Fotopoulos who took the easy four yard shot from within the goal box. The Gators took a 5-1 half-time lead when freshman
Angie Olson scored her first collegiate goal as she shot from the top center of the goal box from nine yards out. Olson was assisted on the play from Olinyk, bringing her match total to a Gator record of four assists.
The Lady Volunteers opened up the second half when Natalie Balash scored at 67:25 off a penalty kick. The Gators earned their final goal when Fotopoulos scored her second goal of the match with a straight shot from 12 yards out from inside the goal box. The Gators had a season high 25 shots on goal as the Lady Volunteers shot 10.
Florida will play host in the second annual University Centre Hotel Shootout next weekend. Participating in this year's round-robin tournament are UF, Old Dominion and Stetson. Florida will play Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. and Stetson on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. All matches will be played at Percy Beard Stadium and admission is free.
