Florida Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla-- The No. 16 University of Florida soccer team (4-2-1, 1-1) handled the heat and the Big Red of Cornell (1-2) Sunday at Percy Beard Stadium, winning 6-0 in front of a crowd of 620.
 
The Gators got on the board first at the 14:38 point of the first half when junior forward Melissa Pini scored with assists from Melanie Freeman and Andi Sellers.  Sellers soon followed with a goal at the 17:52 point with an assist from Pini to put the Gators up 2-0.  Senior Tina Brendel scored the final first-half goal for the Gators with a header off the cross from junior Erin Baxter. The half ended with UF up 3-0.
 
The three first-half goals were the first goals scored by the Gators in the opening 45 minutes since Erin Baxter's goal against Colorado Sept. 1. 
 
The Gators continued their strong offense in the second half when Baxter netted a header off the corner kick from Sellers.  The two assists by Sellers' were the first two of her collegiate career.  Baxter added her second goal of the day less than 13 minutes later, also a header off a corner kick from Lisa Olinyk at the 75:41 mark.  Olinyk added the last Gator goal at the 79:33 point to put the Gators' up 6-0.
 
Pini's goal, the first by the Gators, was the game-winning goal.  This was Pini's first game-winning goal of the season and the 10th of her career.
 
The Gators are back in action Friday, Sept. 26 against Southeastern Conference foe Louisiana State in Baton Rouge.  UF faces Arkansas Sunday, Sept. 28, in Fayetteville.
