KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 2 University of Florida soccer team posted a 5-1 win Friday over Southeastern Conference rival Tennessee Friday evening in front of an UT Soccer Complex crowd of 747. The win ups UF's record to 13-1 and 5-0 in the SEC, while UT drops to 4-9-1 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Three of the Gators' first four shots were goals Friday evening. Florida sophomore
Abby Wambach scored the first of her two goals of the evening at 2:19, putting in the header off the long service sent in from the corner from
Danielle Bass. She also scored UF's final goal of the opening half at 19:38.
Sarah Yohe crossed the ball to the middle of the box to hit Wambach, who was streaking down the center to hit the goal. Yohe also added a goal in the opening half at 9:06. The goal was set up when
Heather Mitts sent the cross into the box. Wambach tapped the ball to Yohe, who hit the shot at the top of the box.
Sophomore
Andi Sellers opened UF's scoring of the second half at 65:10, hitting a 20-yard blast to the left corner. Freshman Erica "Boo" Schubert finished UF's scoring at 72:47, hitting a short shot in the box off the assist from Yohe.
Tennessee scored at 22:45, as Jen Laughridge chipped the ball into the goal after UF keeper
Jordan Kellgren was caught off her line.
Kellgren, UF's starting keeper, turned in one save.
Regan Wiesemann started the second half for UF, turning in a total of four saves. UT starting goalkeeper, Ellen Dean, had no saves in 22 minutes of play. Her replacement, Sarah Shiveley, turned in three saves.
"I definitely don't think that we played at our best today," UF Head Coach
Becky Burleigh said. "We had some mental lapses and lost our concentration at times. It is a positive to come out with a SEC win. We know we will have to step it up Sunday against Georgia."
The Gators return to action on Sunday, Oct. 17 when they travel to Georgia. The UF-Georgia match can be heard live over the internet at 2 p.m. at
