Gators Recruiting Class Ranked No. 2
Friday, October 8, 1999 | Baseball
The 2000 recruiting class by the University of Florida baseball team was ranked No. 2 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball magazine in its annual listing of the top classes. The Gators trailed only Southern California. Florida, which lost six players to the Major League Baseball Draft in the first two rounds, still earned its highest listing ever with a deep class that includes 17 players overall, including 10 high school prep student-athletes, six junior college players and one four-year school transfer. Head Coach Andy Lopez has brought in nationally-ranked classes in each of his previous five seasons, including the 1996 class that rated fourth by Collegiate Baseball that included former Gators Mark Ellis, Brad Wilkerson and Josh Fogg. The 1998 class was listed at No. 3 in the annual listings. Points are awarded to recruits who were drafted, received All-American, All-State and All-Conference recognition as well as points for Players of The Year nationally or state-wide. Additional points are awarded for landing top pitchers since it is so difficult to obtain their services because many opt to sign pro contracts out of high school or junior college. The rankings only reflect players who have come to school and do not include athletes who signed pro contracts after initially signing letters of intent to schools. Florida opens fall practice on October 15th. TOP 30 RECRUITING CLASSES BY COLLEGIATE BASEBALL 1. Southern California 2. FLORIDA 3. Texas 4. Clemson 5. Stanford 6. Miami, Fla. 7. Texas A&M 8.
