GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Three goals from Gator senior captain
Sarah Yohe (Maitland, Fla./Winter Park H.S.) led the No. 3 University of Florida soccer team to a 5-0 win over Southeastern Conference rival Arkansas Sunday afternoon in front of a Percy Beard crowd of 1,320. The win ups UF's 1999 record to 9-0, 4-0 in the SEC, while Arkansas drops to 2-7, 1-3 in the league.
Yohe's hat trick in Sunday's game gave her a total of seven goals for the weekend, as she scored a career-high four in Friday's 11-0 win over Louisiana State. The seven-goal output by Yohe is the highest regular season consecutive match scoring performance in the five-year history of Gator soccer. She scored UF's second goal at 24:34, hitting an 18-yard low shot to the right post off the assist from freshman
Erica "Boo" Schubert. The two teamed up again for Yohe's second goal at 46:27, this time a five-yard header off Schubert's cross. Yohe's final goal came at 61:50, when she put in a three-yarder that rebounded off Arkansas' goalkeeper Brandy Stewart after a shot by sophomore
Abby Wambach.
"Sarah has been finishing well," UF Head Coach
Becky Burleigh said. "She has been in the right place at the right time and that is not an accident. She knows how to frame the goal. The last goal she scored was a follow-up off a shot of Abby's and that's not luck – she's doing what she is supposed to be doing."
Wambach started UF's scoring Sunday, hitting a six-yard shot to the left post set up from freshman
Danielle Murphy. Sophomore
Jill Stevens got her first goal of the season Sunday off a three-yard shot at 31:32.
Florida's starting goalkeeper
Regan Wiesemann recorded one save Sunday. She was replaced at halftime by
Jordan Kellgren, who also had one save. Arkansas' starting goalkeeper Megan Bals had three saves in the opening half. Brandy Stewart, who subbed in at halftime, turned in seven saves for UA. For the match, UF outshot the Lady 'Backs 39-4.
"I think our team took a big step forward as far as the way we are playing and coming out strong, especially early in the game. We needed to set the tone and that's what we did this weekend," Yohe said. "I think our defense played awesome this weekend."
The Gators return to action Friday, when they meet No. 16 Wake Forest. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Percy Beard Stadium and admission is free.
