GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida soccer team was shutout by Brigham Young University 2-0 Monday in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 1,008. The Cougars, ranked No. 18 by Soccer Times, improve to 6-2 for the season, while the Gators drop to 3-5. The five losses are the most ever for the Gator program. Florida posted a 14-4-2 record in the team's premiere season in 1995.
The first half of play was scoreless, but the Cougars got on the board quickly in the second half. On BYU's third consecutive corner kick, senior Sarah Redding headed the ball in from four yards at 48:08. Redding also scored the Cougars' second goal, this time a 24-yard blast from the middle off the assist from Jeni Willardson.
For the match, BYU outshot the Gators 21-13. Florida goalkeeper
Jordan Kellgren recorded a Gator record of 11 saves in the match, while BYU's Jennifer Waldron turned in five saves.
"We've got to take steps forward and today was not a step forward," UF Head Coach
Becky Burleigh said. "We've got to take steps forward in terms of our effort and our defensive presence. If we play well defensively, then the offensive side will come. If we don't play well defensively, then we are going to struggle and that's what happened tonight.
"We've got to find a way to maintain the effort that we had on Friday (when UF defeated No. 13 Southern Cal 2-1)," she continued. "This is disappointing because I thought Friday was kind of a breakthrough for us in terms of showing the younger players what the level needs to be and now the question is why we cannot duplicate that effort."
Next, the Gators head to Charlottesville, Va., for the Coca-Cola Classic. Florida opens the event with No. 9 Hartford on Friday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m., then UF meets No. 13 Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 3:30 p.m. The Florida-Virginia match will air live on Sunshine.
