GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida soccer team opened Southeastern Conference play Friday with a 3-0 win over Tennessee in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 1,527. The win ups the Gators record to 5-6 overall, 1-0 in the SEC, while UT drops to 4-6, 0-1 SEC.
Three Gator juniors scored Friday evening, with
Karyn Hall hitting the first goal at 29:11. Hall hit a 10-yard shot off the assist from junior
Jill Stevens to give the Gators a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Abby Wambach scored the second goal, using her left foot from 11-yards out at 53:52. The final goal was scored by
Andi Sellers, who hit her sixth goal of the season from 15-yards at 81:10.
The Gators outshot the Lady Vols 20-7 Friday and saw two first-half goals disallowed because of offside. UF Head Coach
Becky Burleigh was pleased with the Gators win, but is looking to improve the UF's finishing touch in the future.
"I'm happy with the performance," Burleigh said. "I thought we could have finished a little bit better. We had a lot of opportunities that we let slip by, so we just need to do a bit better job with that in the future.
"We talked about starting off fresh as far as having a 0-0 record in the SEC right now," she continued. "We wanted to get a shutout and we wanted to get a win, so we accomplished both."
For the match, 22 Gators saw playing time. Although the personnel on the field changed quite a bit, Wambach was happy with the team's communication Friday.
"I think overall the communication was awesome," Wambach said. "I thought
Casey Hamel played a great game in the back. I think her stability and the way she played tonight was just awesome. It was contagious, so everyone else followed along."
Next up, the Gators will play host to Georgia for the Adidas Showdown on Sunday, Oct. 1. Match time is set for 2 p.m. in the Percy Beard Stadium and admission is free. The first 1,000 fans to Sunday's match receive a free Adidas Showdown t-shirt. Sunday's match is also the first of three UF home matches that will be broadcast over the Internet.
