Golf Programs Host 32nd Annual Gator Golf Day
Friday, November 30, 2001 | Women's Golf
The 32nd annual Gator Golf Day will be held on Friday, November 30 with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. The format includes a foursome with a current University of Florida men's or women's golf team member serving as captain. The two low net scores will count on each hole.
The annual tournament will be the first event open to the public on the UF Golf Course since its renovation. This season, Gator golf will move into a new era, playing on a fully-renovated course that will open in November. While improvements and additions have been made over the years, this is the first full-scale renovation in 20 years.
The University of Florida hired Jacksonville-based architect Bobby Weed to head up the renovation, and, along with an experienced staff, he has constructed a course that is challenging for collegiate golfers. Par at the newly renovated course will remain at 70, but the yardage will increase to 6,701 yards. Among other things, the course will have longer par-3s, strategically placed bunkers and a tricky par-4 17 that could see just as many double bogeys as eagles and birdies.
Some holes have changed only slightly, keeping some familiarity, while others have been completely redesigned, to challenge golfers day in and day out. Both the men's and the women's golf team host tournaments on the University Golf Course in the spring.
Throughout the year, the University Golf Course plays host to several championship tournaments. Included among these are the Gator and Lady Gator Golf Day Pro-Am, where alumni and current PGA tour players return each year to give their time and money to continue the winning tradition of the Gator golf program. Various state tournaments and the SEC Championships have also been held at the University Golf Course.
Over 20 teams have will compete in the event and all proceeds will go to improve the golf facilities for the UF men's and women's golf teams. The entry fee will include green fees and carts, souvenir package, lunch and on-course refreshments.
