Mick's Quicks -- Feb. 12, 2001
Monday, February 12, 2001 | General
The resilient Gator basketball team will have yet another chance to show its resiliency. As the Gators gained two spots in this weeks ESPN/ USA Today coaches poll (9th), they lost another player.
For the second time in two months, senior power forward Brent Wright will undergo surgery. Wright suffered a broken thumb in last Saturday's hard fought 73-63 victory over Arkansas. Wright's return from this injury remains unknown.
Wright turned in back to back double-doubles last week. He had 11 points and 10 rebounds at Kentucky and then scored 14 points with 10 rebounds against Arkansas. Wright played a season high 35 minutes against the Hogs.
The Gators won five of six games after Wright returned from his stress fracture in his foot. His first surgery was performed on January 7. The Gators went 1-3 when he was sidelined. Upon his return, he had averaged 24 minutes per game and the Gators' only defeat was last weeks one-point loss at Kentucky.
Wright made his first start of the SEC season Saturday against Arkansas. Sophomore Matt Bonner came off the bench after having started nine games in a row. Bonner will return to the starting lineup when the Gators play at LSU Tuesday night. Bonner scored 10 points with 8 rebounds in just 20 minutes against the Hogs.
The Gators (16-5, 6-4) moved into second place in the SEC East. Florida has six conference games left - split evenly home and road. However, the Gators will play twice on the road this week (at LSU and then Sunday at Tennessee).
Brett Nelson remains the league's hottest scorer. Nelson has the highest scoring average in SEC games (18.3) than any other player. He has hit double figures in 11 straight games (19.0) and he has been an ironman. In the last 8 games, Nelson has averaged 36 minutes.
The Gators have won 10 straight regular season games against teams in the SEC Western Division. Florida will be looking to win back to back games in Baton Rouge for the first time since 1977-78. Additionally, Florida is 8-5 on the road the last two years after going only 8-24 on the SEC road in the previous four seasons.
