Short-Handed Women's Tennis Defeats Auburn, 6-1

AUBURN, Ala. - The fourth-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team (10-0, 5-0 SEC) posted a 6-1 victory over Auburn (2-8, 0-5 SEC), despite having just five players competing.
The fourth-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team (10-0, 5-0 SEC) posted a 6-1 victory over Auburn (2-8, 0-5 SEC), despite having just five players competing. With only six eligible players on the current roster, three Gators are required to sit out one dual match during the season because of the maximum number of competitions an athlete can play throughout the course of one year.

Freshman Annika Bengtsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) took the day off but her Gator teammates more than made up for her absence, winning all five singles matches in straight sets and capturing the doubles point.

"This was not a pretty match for us compared to the last couple of matches we played at home," UF head coach Andy Brandi said.

Saturday's match was Florida's second in as many days, and was the team's fourth match in six days. The Gators continue their grueling stretch one more day, traveling to Alabama on Sunday for a meeting with the Crimson Tide. Today's 6-1 win was the first match during this current spree that an opponent has logged a point in the team score.

The Gators opened the match winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions by identical 8-3 scores. In singles freshman Lindsay Dawaf (Oleny, MD) posted the second 6-0, 6-0 win of her young career, defeating Mattina Janska at the No. 4 spot.
