Women's Tennis defeats N.C. State, 6-1

For the second time this season Florida entered a dual match with just five players suiting up for action. Because of the maximum number of competitions an athlete is allowed to play, the Gators forfeited the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches as freshman Lindsay Dawaf sat out the match. However fifth-ranked Florida (12-0) still emerged with a convincing 6-1 victory over N.C. State (5-6) Thursday evening at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
"Overall I thought we did a good job today," UF head coach Andy Brandi said. "It's been a while since we've played at home, so today's match was a good opportunity to get use to playing at home and playing under the lights again."
Florida continues its four-match home stand tomorrow, March 23, when the Gators play host to ninth-ranked Tennessee beginning at 4:00 p.m. before welcoming fourth-ranked Vanderbilt on Sunday and second-ranked Duke on Wednesday.
Florida secured the doubles point for the 12th time this season despite sacrificing one of the doubles matches. The No. 2 duo of Stephanie Hazlett and Julia Scaringe were impressive in their 8-1 win over Myrna Bawono and Katrina Gildemeister. At the No. 1 position, Whitney Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff found themselves leading Jackie Leskovar and Loni Worsley 7-4, but trailing 40-0 on Worsley's serve. The Gators rallied and won the next five points to earn the break and capture the deciding doubles match.
In singles action, Hazlett, Lehnhoff and Scaringe all raced out to win the first set of their respective singles matches 6-0. Lehnhoff and Hazlett continued their quick dominance in the second set en route to identical 6- 0, 6-1 victories. Lehnhoff topped Katrina Gildemeister at No. 2 in 37 minutes, while Hazlett polished off Kristen Nicholls at No. 3 in 40 minutes.
"Jessica (Lehnhoff) played very, very well. She took control of her match and dictated the flow of the points," Brandi said.
Scaringe provided the clinching dual match point for the Gators with her 6- 0, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Jennifer Jassawalla in 55 minutes.
At the No. 1 position Laiho battled past Jackie Leskovar 6-3, 6-3, with each player earning several service breaks throughout the match.
The No. 5 match was the most competitive match at Linder Stadium on this cool Thursday evening, but UF freshman Annika Bengtsson out-dueled Lori Worsley 6-1, 6-2 to remain undefeated in dual match singles play.
