Three Softball Players Named All-SEC
Wednesday, May 9, 2001 | Softball
Three Florida Gators, including one three-time honoree, were selected to the All-Southeastern Conference softball second team, the league office announced Wednesday from the site of the 2001 SEC Tournament.
UF's three selections tied the second-most honorees in program history. Senior first baseman Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) is the first UF player to be named All-SEC three times in her career. Selected as an infielder, Boone leads all such players with a .994 fielding percentage, and is first in overall and SEC games only putouts and chances categories. Boone is third after fielding 16 double plays in all games. A .317 hitter, she is second in the league with 16 doubles and 33 RBI in all games.
Emily Marino (Joliet, Ill./Joliet), a senior who shares time as catcher and designated player, earns the honor as a utility player for the second straight year. Marino has made her mark as a power hitter throughout her career and holds the UF career home runs record with 28. All three of her homers this year have come in SEC games. Marino is second in the league with 43 walks in all games and third with 23 free passes in conference games.
Shortstop Jackie Marchetta (Boyton Beach, Fla./Santaluces/Florida Southern College) was selected as an All-SEC infielder in her first year as a Gator. The sophomore transfer leads the club with 15 stolen bases and is fifth in the conference with 10 thefts in SEC games. Defensively, Marchetta is seventh overall with 127 assists and fourth with 65 helpers in league games.
LSU's Britni Sneed and Yvette Girouard were named Player and Coach of the Year, respectively. Alabama's Jackie McClain was named Freshman of the Year.
The first and second teams consist of 12 positions each: infielders (4) and outfielders (3), pitchers (2), catcher (1), DP/Utility (1) and at-large (1). (Due to a new rule voted on by the league's athletic directors, there can be no tiebreakers in All-SEC voting, which accounts for the 13 players on the second team).
The 2001 SEC Softball Tournament is Thursday-Sunday, May 10-13 at Jim Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. Fifth-seeded UF (36-24) will play No. 4 Mississippi State (35-24) in the first round Thursday at 6 p.m. WRUF-AM 850 will broadcast the game live
