Saturday, October 12, 2002 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis doubles team of Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) and Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) highlighted an outstanding day of competition for the Gators at the 2002 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Gordon and Scaringe, who are the 26th-ranked duo in the country, stunned the second-ranked team of Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson from Southern California 8-3 to advance to the semifinals of the national event.
"I am so proud of Alexis and Julia," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "(Assistant coach) Dave Balogh has been working so hard with them and putting in so much time and all his work and their work is paying off in this tournament. They are playing so well right now and it was a true team effort that they are having this type of success in a national tournament."
"I don't think Alexis and Julia could have played any better than they did today," said UF assistant coach Dave Balogh, who is in California with the players. "They executed every facet of the doubles game perfectly. We're psyched for them!"
The Gator tandem face seventh-ranked Linda Faltykova and Katia Koloynska from Oklahoma State in the semifinals on Saturday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
In singles action, UF's Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) upset eighth-ranked Kate Pinchbeck from North Carolina 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the main draw, before falling to third-ranked and second-seeded Agata Cioroch from Georgia in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Zerene Reyes (Mexico City, Mexico) lost her second round battle to Duke's Amanda Johnson 6-3, 7-6 (2).
In consolation singles play, junior Julie Rotondi (Hingham, MA) notched a pair of big wins, downing Jessica Roland from Texas A&M 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round before toppling Vanderbilt's 10th-ranked Sarah Riske 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
"Julie played a great third set," Balogh said. "She got a great victory over a highly ranked opponent. That's so good for her confidence."
Gordon won her first round consolation singles bout, with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Arizona's 13th-ranked Maja Mlakar, but lost to Missouri's Urska Juric 7-6 (4), 6-0 in the ensuing round.
The doubles team of Dawaf and Rotondi defeated Texas A&M's Ashley Hedberg and Jessica Roland 8-5 in the first round of the consolation doubles draw and will face Duke's Hillary Adams and Kelly McCain in the semifinals on Saturday.
