Omni Hotels So. Regional-Day 2
Two W-Tennis Doubles Teams in QF of Region Champs
Sunday, October 27, 2002 | Women's Tennis
Heavy rains in southeastern Alabama forced a venue change at the Omni Hotels South Region Championships on Saturday, as the University of Florida women's tennis team traveled to the University of Alabama's Hank Crisp Indoor Facility in Tuscaloosa to complete a second day of action. Singles play was rescheduled for Sunday, but the Gators had three doubles teams in action and two advanced to the quarterfinal round.
Jennifer Magley (Bradenton, FL) and Zerene Reyes (Mexico City, Mexico) defeated South Alabama's Andrea Kurekova and Viktoria Stoklosova 8-5 in the first round before topping Alabama's Ashley Bentley and Sophia Cremers 8-3 to reach the quarterfinal round.
UF's second-seeded duo of Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) and Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) received a first round bye and defeated FSU's Dumitrescu and Daniela Gheorghe 8-6 to advance.
The Gator's top-seeded pair of Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) and Julie Rotondi (Hingham, MA) were upset in the opening round, losing 8-6 to Georgia Tech's Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto, Georgia Tech.
"Jennifer and Zerene did a great job of adjusting to the indoor courts," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "They are really learning how to play with each other and work together on the court. This was the best I've seen them play together all year."
Dawaf, Rotondi, Scaringe, Gordon and Magley resume singles action in the round of 16 on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET.
This four-day event serves as the qualifying tournament for the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which will be held from November 8 to 10 in Dallas. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion advance to the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which is the second of three individual national championship events played on the collegiate circuit.
