Monday, October 28, 2002 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team will be strongly represented on the final day of competition at the Omni Hotels South Region Championships, as three Gators are in the singles semifinals and one doubles team is in the final. The singles matches begin at 9 a.m. (ET) on Monday at the University of Alabama's Hank Crisp Indoor Facility in Tuscaloosa.
UF junior Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) faces sophomore teammate Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) in one semifinal match, while senior Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) duals Alabama's Millie Begovich in the other. Scaringe and Gordon combine to challenge Mississippi's Mira Radu and Virginia Tumatis for the doubles title immediately following the singles final match.
Five Gators entered Sunday's action in the round of 16, as junior Julie Rotondi (Hingham, MA) lost a tough battle to Scaringe 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, while freshman Jennifer Magley (Bradenton, FL) dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Georgia Tech's Catherine Gunn in the round of 16.
"We played very well today," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "The indoor courts are really fast and we made some good adjustments to our games today. Having three of the four singles semifinalists is great. With the way everyone is playing, we could have had all four spots if Julie and Julia didn't have to play each other in the quarterfinals. That match between the two of them was tremendous."
This four-day event serves as the qualifying tournament for the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which will be held from November 8 to 10 in Dallas. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion advance to the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which is the second of three individual national championship events played on the collegiate circuit.
