Women’s Tennis Sweeps Regional Championship Titles

The University of Florida women's tennis team swept the singles and doubles titles at the Omni Hotels South Region Championships on Monday at the University of Alabama's Hank Crisp Indoor Facility in Tuscaloosa.
In Monday's singles semifinal matches, Gator sophomore Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) upset top-seeded teammate Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, while UF senior Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) defeated Alabama's Millie Begovich 7-6, 6-4 to set up an all-Gator final. That final match will be played in Gainesville at a later date. After the victorious singles semifinal matches, Gordon and Scaringe paired in the doubles championship bout and defeated Mississippi's Mira Radu and Virginia Tumatis 8-2 to claim the title.
This four-day event served as the qualifying tournament for the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which will be held from November 8 to 10 in Dallas. Both singles finalists and the doubles champion advance to the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which is the second of three individual national championship events played on the collegiate circuit.
Gordon's win over 12th-ranked Dawaf marked the highest-ranked opponent Gordon has ever defeated. Scaringe's victory earned her a first-ever trip into a collegiate singles grand slam event. Monday's doubles title for Gordon and Scaringe is the second consecutive time this season the Gator tandem has reached the main draw of a grand slam event after playing through the qualifying draw. At the Riviera All-American Championships, Gordon and Scaringe raced through the qualifying event and reached the semifinals of the main draw.
