Dawaf & Gordon Win at W-Tennis Nat'l Indoor Champs
Friday, November 8, 2002 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) and Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) won their respective first round singles matches Thursday at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships played at Brookhaven Country Club.
Dawaf, the No. 7 seed in the 32-player singles draw, defeated Baylor's Vida Mulec 6-2, 6-0 in her first round match and faces Northwestern's Marine Piriou in the round of 16 Friday morning. Gordon topped Harvard's Alexis Matire 6-2, 6-2 in her opening contest and will play Northwestern's Christelle Grier in the next round.
Gator senior Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) lost for the first time in 10 singles matches this season, falling in the first round 6-2, 6-2 to UCLA's Sara Walker, the No. 6 seed in the event. Junior Julie Rotondi (Hingham, MA) also dropped her opening round singles match with the 6-3, 6-4 decision to Tulane's Julie Smekodub. Both will compete in the consolation draw beginning Friday.
In doubles action, both Gator tandems won their opening round matches in the 16-team draw, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals. Gordon and Scaringe defeated SMU's Kit Carson and Nadia Vaughan 8-3, but lost to California's Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones 8-3. UF's Dawaf and Rotondi began with a 8-4 win over Pennsylvania's Shela Chao and Alice Pirsu, but couldn't capitalize on a pair of match points in the second round and lost a 9-8 (7) heartbreaker to Missouri's Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova, Missouri.
"Overall, it was an okay day for us. We played and compete pretty well, but hopefully we'll learn from today's matches and play even better on Friday," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "Alexis and Lindsay played very well in singles. They made great adjustments to the very fast indoor courts."
The Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships is the second of three national championship singles and doubles events played on the collegiate circuit.
