South Carolina Defeats Baseball 2-1

A battle between the Southeastern Conference’s top two offensive ballclubs turned into a pitcher’s duel between Gary Bell and Jimmy Ramshaw as No. 4 South Carolina handed No. 6 Florida a 2-1 loss Friday at Sarge-Frye Field.

Florida junior catcher Brian Rose was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List announced Friday by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. The Watch List includes 30 of the nation's top college catchers.

Presented annually to the nation's top college catcher, the Johnny Bench Award watch list will be narrowed down to 10 semi-finalists by May 15, 2002. Finalists will be announced in June at the College World Series. A final vote among the national committee will occur at the end of the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the fifth annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet.

Rose, a junior from Miami (Killian H.S.), is currently hitting .282 (22-78) with four home runs and 19 RBI. He leads the Gators in times being hit by pitch with eight and has thrown out five of 15 runners attempting to steal. His defense has been spectacular as he leads SEC catchers in fielding percentage (1.000) in 145 opportunities.

Rose has now been nominated for the award for the second time in his career.
