Three W Golfers Named to SEC Academic Honor Roll
Wednesday, April 17, 2002 | Women's Golf
Three University of Florida women's golfers have been named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, the league announced Wednesday. Junior Jeanne Cho (Boulogne, France), sophomore Joy Stephenson (Ft. Myers, Fla.) and junior Brittany Straza (Ft. Myers, Fla.) are each making their second appearance on the SEC's Honor Roll.
Cho, a quantitative sciences major with a 4.00 grade point average, leads the team with a 75.38 stroke average for this season. She won the individual title at the 2002 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, helping the Gators to the team title. For that performance, Cho was named SEC Golfer of the Week on March 29th. She has notched three top-five finishes this season.
Stephenson, a business administration major with a 3.45 gpa, has competed in three tournaments this season and was one of six UF golfers to finish in the top 25 at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational. She saw her best round of the season come in the final round of the TRW Regional Challenge, in which she shot a 74 to help the Gators to a tie for 10th place. That tournament featured 13 teams that are currently in the top 25 of the Sagarin rankings.
Straza, a public relations major with a 3.13 gpa, is second on the team with a 75.42 stroke average. She has recorded two top-five finishes this season, including a tie for second at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational, helping seal the team victory for Florida. Straza has finished in the top 20 in seven of eight tournaments this season and has recorded her season-low score of 69 in two different events this year.
All three golfers were also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll last year.
A total of 47 student-athletes were named to the 2002 SEC Women's Golf Academic Honor Roll. Arkansas and LSU both topped the list with six student-athletes on the academic roster. Alabama, Kentucky and South Carolina were close behind with five honorees.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must: 1) have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for their career; 2) be a sophomore or higher in academic classification; and 3) have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2002 SEC Women's Golf Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2000-01 academic calendar.
