Gator Gymnastics Team Holds Annual Awards Banquet

Senior Hilary Thompson picked up the University of Florida gymnastics team's Outstanding Gymnast award Sunday afternoon at the team's annual banquet, held in F-Club at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. During the course of the 2002 season, Thompson claimed a total of nine event titles - including five floor crowns. She earned 2002 All-America second-team honors for both the all-around and floor exercise, was named to the All-Southeastern Conference first team and was a finalist for the AAI Senior of the Year.

Freshman Erinn Dooley, who joined the Gator lineup in 2002 after missing last season with a fracture of the right tibia plateau, received the "Fightin' Gator" award this season. Orley Szmuch claimed the Gators' 2002 Outstanding Freshman award. Szmuch also was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and turned in the Gators' top scores for all-around, vault, uneven bars and shared the season-high on balance beam. Junior Lindsey Miner received the Scholar-Athlete award and sophomore Kristen Stucky was chosen as the 2002 recipient of the "Charlie's Angel" award, given in memory of former Gator Gymnastics Gang president Charlie Eggleston.
During the 2002 season, the Gators (14-11) took 10th in the NCAA Championships and third in the SEC Championships. Two Gators, Thompson and Miner, earned All-America honors and three gymnasts, Thompson, Szmuch and Erin Pendleton, earned All-SEC honors.
