Rain Cancels First Day of NCAA W-Tennis Singles
Monday, May 20, 2002 | Women's Tennis
Rain has postponed the start of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships, which was scheduled to begin on Monday at the Taube Family Tennis Center. NCAA Officials made decision to cancel all matches scheduled for today and begin all singles action on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., PT (12 Noon, ET).
Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) and Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) are two of 64 players competing in the NCAA Singles Championships. There will be two rounds of singles played in the single-elimination tournament.
Lehnhoff and Dawaf also will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships, which has been moved back one day and will now begin on Wednesday.
Lehnhoff is the No. 3 seeded player in the singles tournament and faces Oklahoma's Anda Perianu in the first round. Dawaf's first round opponent is Duke's Julie DeRoo.
The Gator pair then team for the 32-team doubles draw. Dawaf and Lehnhoff received the No. 3 seeded and will face Alabama's Millie Begovic and Weyli Chang in the opening round.
Lehnhoff has never faced Perianu in collegiate competition. Dawaf will play DeRoo for the first time, as well. In doubles, Lehnhoff and Dawaf defeated Begovic and Chang 8-6 during the regular season dual match. The NCAA Doubles Championships will be scored using the traditional format, with the winner claiming two of three six-game sets.
Last year, Lehnhoff paired with now-graduated Whitney Laiho to win the NCAA Doubles title. It was the fourth time a Gator duo captured the NCAA Doubles crown. Florida athletes have combine to win four NCAA Singles titles, with the last coming in 1996 when Jill Craybas won the crown.
