Reyes Highlights W-Tennis Play at Kickoff Classic

University of Florida sophomore Zerene Reyes advanced to the quarterfinals of the Collegiate Kickoff Classic, highlighting the Gator women's tennis team's first day of play at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
Reyes, who is the No. 6 seed in the 22-player singles draw, earned a first round bye before defeating Tennessee's Crystal Cleveland 6-3, 6-1. Reyes plays Stanford's Alice Barnes, who is ranked 13th nationally, on Saturday morning.
Gator freshman Boglarka Berecz won her collegiate debut, outlasting Tennessee's Melissa Schaub 7-6, 6-4 in the opening round. Berecz then ran into the Georgia's Agata Cioroch, who is the No. 1-ranked play in the country, and lost 6-3, 6-4.
Jennifer Magley drew a tough opponent in Stanford's 17th-ranked Amber Liu, and lost 6-0, 6-1 in the second round after both received an opening-round bye.
Magley regrouped and paired with Reyes to earn an impressive 8-1 doubles victory over North Carolina's 19th-ranked and top-seeded Kendrick Bunn and Kate Pinchbeck in the quarterfinal round.
"Zerene and Jennifer played really well in doubles," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "I'm extremely happy, not just with the score, but with their execution. They had a lot of movement and had very good service games. We're looking forward to Saturday's matches."
The three-day tournament features players from 2002 NCAA champion and preseason top-ranked Stanford, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 17 UNLV and No. 22 Notre Dame.
Two rounds of singles and one round of doubles are scheduled for Saturday.
